Flash Mob for Saint Sebastian’s Day: “Even the Strong Need Support, and the Weak Can Help”

Saint Sebastian's Day is traditionally celebrated worldwide on January 20th. His memory is preserved primarily in cities where he is honored as a heavenly patron, such as Rome, Venice, Palma de Mallorca, and Rio de Janeiro (officially known as São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro). However, the figure of Saint Sebastian deserves much greater recognition, as he embodies true humanitarian values.

Strong, incredibly handsome, and at the height of his military and courtly career, Sebastian remained true to his convictions and helped many. Interestingly, women played a crucial role in his life—at a time when they were often portrayed as weak and dependent on society. It was women who literally saved Sebastian after his torture and immortalized his legacy.

Saint Sebastian became a symbol of:

  • heavenly patronage and protection for those traditionally seen as embodiments of strength—such as soldiers, police officers, and athletes—as well as for the vulnerable or marginalized, including children, victims of pandemics, and members of sexual minorities;

  • a man whose depiction in art was the first to widely highlight and affirm the importance of women as spiritually independent individuals, whose support even strong men sometimes cannot do without.

On January 20th, in celebration of Saint Sebastian’s Day, a heartfelt flash mob will commence under the banner, “Even the Strong Need Support, and the Weak Can Help.” This symbolic day serves as a reminder that anyone can be a source of strength while also being in need of assistance. During this event, participants will attach a badge resembling a “heart with an arrow” to their clothing or share a similar symbol on their social media pages.

Jacques Blanchard (1600-1638), completed around 1630, is "Saint Sebastian Tended by Saint Irene"

What Does This Symbol Mean?
The heart with an arrow represents openness and a willingness to support those who are struggling. When you see this symbol, feel free to seek help, whether it’s for someone to listen, discuss a problem, offer moral support, or even assist with something material. Those participating in the flash mob are ready to help without judgment or unnecessary questions, fostering an atmosphere of mutual aid and trust.

How to Participate?

  1. Attach the “heart with an arrow” badge to your clothing on this day—it can be a brooch, sticker, or hand-drawn symbol.

  2. If you are active on social media, share an image of this symbol on your page using the hashtag #Support20January. This will demonstrate your readiness to help both online and offline.

  3. Spread the word about the flash mob to your friends, so more people can feel part of this noble initiative.

How Does It Work?
When you encounter someone displaying this badge, don’t hesitate to approach them. You can share your concerns or simply ask for advice. The essence of this initiative is that even the strongest individuals can find themselves in difficult situations, and help can come from the most unexpected places. Everyone has the potential to support one another.

This flash mob serves as a reminder that mutual assistance unites people, and even a small act of kindness can change someone’s life. Let us join together to make this day special by spreading support and kindness!
